DR. CARLOS MARTINEZ-ASSAD (Mexico)

Dr. Martinez-Assad holds a Ph.D. in Political Sociology from the School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences at the University of Paris, France. He was a Lecturer in the History Studies Center at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and has been a Visiting Professor at the Autonomous University of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain; the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico, and the University of Arizona in Phoenix, USA. He was the Director of the Social Research Institute of the UNAM from 1983 till 1989. He is a Researcher Emeritus of the Institute of Social Investigations of the UNAM and of the National System of Investigators. He is a prolific writer with many publications under his belt, such as, among others, A Dios lo que es de Dios; Los Lunes Rojos: Antologia de la Educaci Racionalista en México; Los Rebeldes Vencidos; Veracruz: Puerto de Llegada; Memoria de Líban, La Casa de las Once Puertas (novel), En el Verano, la tierra (Novel), and Los Cuatro Puntos Orientales el Regreso de los Árabes a la Historia. He has written on the role of the Lebanese in Mexican cinema and has produced many documentaries, including Tabasco Entre El Agua Y El Fuego, Sabores e Sinsabores: La Herencia Libanesa en México, La Historia en la Mirada, 1910: La Universidad National y el Barrio Universitaro, and Los Libaneses en el Cine Mexicano. He has received numerous awards, such as ‘The National University Award in Research in Social Sciences,’ ‘National Prize of Sciences and Arts,’ ‘Salvador Azuela Award,’ ‘Antonio Garcia Award,’ ‘Atanasio G. Saravia Award,’ ‘Historical Merit Medal,’ ‘Byblos Merit Award’ from Mexico, and the ‘Acknowledgment Award’ presented by the Lebanese Emigration Research Center (LERC) at Notre Dame University-Louaize (NDU), Lebanon.
